It’s not every day that you get the chance to review something that has the potential to be big and disruptive, we got the chance to visit Naturo Pty Ltd and come away with an appreciation that this technology could be the biggest thing since Pasteurisation was invented by Louise Pasteur. Imagine shipping products all around the World and supplying global markets where previously they could only be services by local suppliers or airfreight, this is the disruption we see Naturo doing in the Dairy and Avocado industries.
Natavo, Natural Avocado is the brand name for the Naturo avocado product.
We have all opened an avocado, used half and put the other half in the fridge, to return later to a brown horror, so we toss the other half out and start another fresh avocado.
Born and bred in Coolum Qld., Australia, Naturo has developed a process which opens global marketing of avocado cut products. The natural process enables avocado flesh to be stored and shipped long distances and then remain usable for 10 days after opening, without going brown. The process is possible after development of the ability to turn off the enzyme that makes avocado go brown. Once this is done the gap in the avocado supply chain is bridged by allowing frozen product to be marketed and shipped without the issues of time.

Fresh Milk shipped World wide
Kopi Brisbane asked Jeff Hastings and Ross Harris the question, “What is the story with Fresh Milk?”
We then heard the story of Naturo, that they have just announced to the world, that they have a new technology for the treatment and processing of dairy milk, this technology is the first since pasteurisation was invented in 1864, to be approved. And it is a viable alternative to pasteurisation. The technology does not rely upon heat, which the other processes such as pasteurisation and UHT use.
Limitations of Pasteurisation include the limited shelf life, of 14 days. One of the main benefits of the process developed at Naturo is the long shelf life, there are four main benefits of our process. For the shelf life Naturo says the milk product lasts 60 days, however in reality it is much longer, closer to 90 days.
The second benefit, is that it is safer than pasteurisation, as they destroy more pathogens, especially the pathogen bacillus cereus, which pasteurisation does not kill.
Number 3 benefit, is to be able to retain certain enzymes and vitamins that are otherwise destroyed through pasteurisation.
The 4th thing is the taste is much closer to raw milk, a richer creamer taste and flavour.
So with this new processes, Naturo has announce the technology, tested validated and certified the process, and are in the market looking for investors. This is a multistage process, unlike the avocado process, so first they need to build a factory and production facility, so it is 15 – 18 months away from having products from a full sized plant. Naturo is just completing a capital raising for Naturo, securing new investment into that business, to build a factory, and that’s why, they need that time to establish and have products ready for market from an Australian factory. Under consideration are at least 3 possible sites, in Tasmania, Victoria, and Queensland. Capital raising is today nearly complete, with only a week left, so any overseas investor wishing to be involved should get in contact with Jeff Hastings ASAP (see details above).
The current capital needs are likely to be found and further capital will be required in the future for further expansion and plans for bigger expansion, and also for offshore production, so don’t be disappointed if you miss this round.
There are many options possible at present, there is a lot of IP and global patents in place for protection, so there is the possibility of just licencing the technology and the brand, as well as JV’s and owned production facilities.
The process is completely natural and just applies natural forces to the product. So the process and product is fully certified, it is now just the process of increasing the scale of production and systems to handle mass production. There is a 4 stage process utilised (time, pressure, temperature and homogenisation?) taking a similar time to produce a litre of milk that a UHT plant would take. All the process details are speculation, as the complete process is still under wraps.
The product can then be used in 2 alternative ways, firstly as fresh mild and secondly in products like yoghurt, cheese, etc as the flavour volatiles are retained, the flavour and potential that is possible are greatly increased. Longer shelf life is given to the products that use this milk as a raw material as well as the cheese makers who would like to use an unpasteurised milk, can now do so safely with Naturo milk.
The next step would be to extend the technology to other mammals such as goats, sheep, buffalos etc.
One of the most challenging situation that Naturo has found, has been ability to produce and move to the next step due to the cost and size of the production and the investments that required.
The team, management and board of Naturo have been very supportive and professional throughout the 5 years developing the company to date, in getting the product ready for market.
Personally Jeff would like to see the delivery of milk to the worlds young children as he also had when he grew up in New Zealand before coming to live and study in Australia. In New Zealand Jeff had a bottle of milk each day provided. Many parts of the world do not have this and so it would be Jeffs way of giving back, to allow those markets to have fresh milk. It is natural product rich in protein and vitamins and very good for the body and growth of healthy bodies.
One of the major advantages of the new process is that the B group vitamins are retained better, and so there is a real market opportunity to supply this milk to toddlers, or the children transitioning from powder infant formula to full adult or regular fresh milk.
So as a real and viable new product of offering fresh milk with a long shelf life, makes Nuturo product quite unique and positions them into a new space in the market. So with this long shelf life the possibility of shipping by sea means markets are opened up and production from places further away will be able to deliver to those markets. In this way Naturo will be another market disturber and changer of the operation mode of the market.
